With entrepreneurial parents, I grew up with the notion that I needed to be responsible for creating business opportunities. During my student days I started several businesses. However, as soon as I got the opportunity to work as a management trainee at one of the largest companies in the Netherlands, I stepped into the corporate world. I don’tregret it for a minute! Most of my twenty years experience stems from those days. Working within organisations which have societal impact due to their size.
For the first ten years I was fully active in commercial roles. Then I followed my heart and started working in the field of CSR and sustainability. The trigger – a diving experience in 2003, when I visited Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. I love nothing more than the freedom of deep sea diving and have been lucky enough to dive in many places around the world. In Australia I couldn’t believe how much grey coral there was: which meant only one thing – dead coral. I couldn’t comprehend why. Three years later, in 2006, the answer was revealed by Al Gore, in his documentary: AnInconvenient Truth.
This call for climate awareness meant, for me, that now was the time to focus on sustainability. Not only privately, but also professionally. Sure, I’m not an ecologist, or a beta and was mainly educated in marketing. So, I took it upon myself to spend the evenings following a scientific study business administration with a CSR focus. At that time, it was a very new concept.
CSR MANAGER
I began looking for my perfect job – a way to put my goals into action: CSR manager at a commercial company. Theperfect fit for both heart and head. In 2009 I got the chance at Vodafone Netherlands. After 10 years of working under the Vodafone Netherlands umbrella, in a variety of different roles from the Vodafone Group to VodafoneZiggo, I could reflect on a very good choice. I’d made many mistakes, learned a lot and achieved even more. I’d been able to make a real impact. In my opinion, the role of CSR manager is the best and most important job in a large organisation.
But there’s more to it than just working for one large company. I wanted to work for multiple companies. To make real social impact in different ways. As an independent consultant you are dynamic and flexible enough to help several customers at once. You can choose what fits and where you develop. And with my knowledge and experience I know how I can add value to large organisations.

So, I started my own consultancy, with a focus on sustainability, societal impact and Impact Valuation. I followed my heart and my head. I work with others, but keep it authentic.
