It affects day-to-day operations, defines relationships with stakeholders and influences long-term strategy. In the sustainability context of <a href=\"https:\/\/empact.nu\/en\/environment\/\">environmental<\/a> pollution, we distinguish four main categories, each of which has its own challenges and solution directions: <\/p><h3>Air pollution<\/h3><div>All emissions to air except greenhouse gases. Think particulate matter, nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds. Main sources are transportation, industry and power generation. This type of pollution has a direct impact on public health and is becoming increasingly heavily regulated.   <\/div><h3>Water pollution<\/h3><div>Pollution of surface and groundwater by heavy metals, pesticides, chemicals and other substances. The Netherlands has the worst water quality of any EU member state, mainly due to agriculture and industry. This makes water management a strategic priority for many organizations.  <\/div><h3>Soil pollution<\/h3><h3><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: 'Open Sans', sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-weight: 400;\">Contamination of soil by chemicals, heavy metals and PFAS (&#8220;forever chemicals&#8221;). Often occurs indirectly through air and water pollution, but also directly through improper waste management. With the upcoming EU regulations around PFAS, this becomes an urgent concern.  <\/span><\/h3><h3>Other pollution<\/h3><p>Noise, light pollution and microplastics. The Netherlands is the most light-polluted country in Europe and 22% of EU residents suffer from traffic noise.
